What does URL encoding actually do?
It replaces characters that aren't safe inside a URL (spaces, &, =, ?, non-ASCII characters, etc.) with a "%" followed by their hex code, so the string can be safely used as a URL or query parameter without breaking it.
What's the difference between encoding a full URL and a URL component?
Encoding a full URL leaves structural characters like "://" and "/" untouched so the URL still works; encoding a component (like a single query value) escapes those same characters too, since they'd otherwise be misread as part of the URL's structure.
Why does decoding sometimes show garbled text?
That usually means the input wasn't actually percent-encoded, or it was encoded with a different character set. Make sure you're pasting the exact encoded string, including every "%XX" sequence.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Encoding and decoding happen entirely in your browser — nothing you paste is sent or stored, and no account is needed.
