Frequently asked questions

What are changefreq and priority used for?
changefreq hints how often a page tends to change (e.g. daily, weekly) and priority (0.0–1.0) hints its relative importance versus other URLs in the same sitemap. Search engines treat both as hints, not guarantees.
What does lastmod need to be?
It’s the date a URL was last modified, in a standard date format — it helps crawlers decide whether a page needs re-crawling.
Where should I upload the generated sitemap.xml?
Upload it to your site’s root (e.g. example.com/sitemap.xml), then reference that URL from your robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
Is there a limit to how many URLs I can paste in?
You can paste in a large list of URLs; keep in mind the sitemap protocol itself caps a single file at 50,000 URLs, so very large sites should split into multiple sitemap files.
